Pool Water Too Hot? How to Actually Cool a Pool in Arizona

By late July, we get the same complaint from East Valley homeowners almost daily: the pool has stopped being refreshing. It's still blue, still balanced, still running fine — it just feels like stepping into bathwater. Shallow play pools and tanning ledges are usually the worst offenders since less water volume heats up faster, but even a full-size pool in Queen Creek or San Tan Valley can sit at 90°+ for weeks at a stretch once the summer heat settles in.

Why Arizona pools get this hot

A backyard pool is essentially a shallow, dark-bottomed heat sink sitting under direct desert sun for most of daylight hours. Air temperatures in the low 100s combined with intense, nearly cloudless UV exposure push water temperature up fast, and it keeps climbing day over day because the pool never fully cools back down overnight before the next day's sun hits it again. Smaller volumes of water — baja shelves, spillover spas, kiddie pools — swing hotter and faster than a deep main pool for the same reason a shallow puddle heats faster than a lake.

Why hot water is a real problem, not just discomfort

It's tempting to treat this as purely a comfort issue, but hot water actually works against the chemistry and health of the pool too. Chlorine breaks down faster at higher temperatures, meaning a pool running in the 90s burns through sanitizer noticeably quicker than the same pool at 82-85°. Algae also thrives in warmer water — most algae species grow far more aggressively above roughly 85°, which is part of why hot late-summer pools seem to fight algae more than they did in June. And from a swimmer's standpoint, water that's barely cooler than the air outside stops delivering the actual relief a pool is supposed to provide, which is often the real complaint underneath "the pool feels weird lately."

What actually works, ranked honestly

There's a real hierarchy here, and it's worth being straight about what does something meaningful versus what's mostly folklore.

1. Run water features and the pump at night

This is the highest-value, lowest-cost option most homeowners aren't using. Aerators, deck jets, waterfalls, and fountains all cool water through evaporation — every gallon that evaporates off a spray or waterfall pulls heat out of the water it left behind. Running those features overnight, after the sun goes down and while overnight air temperatures drop, lets that evaporative cooling actually bring the water temperature down instead of just recirculating already-hot water in daylight. A pool running its water features from dusk through early morning can drop several degrees compared to one that only runs its pump during the day.

2. Shade

Shade sails, umbrellas, and strategically placed trees reduce direct solar heat gain on the water surface, which slows how fast the pool heats up in the first place. It's not going to actively cool water that's already hot, but it meaningfully reduces how much heat accumulates through the day. As a bonus, shade over the water also cuts down on UV-driven chlorine loss — the same intense sun heating your pool is also the sun burning off your sanitizer, so shade helps both problems at once.

3. Pool chillers and reversible heat pumps

This is the only method on the list that actively cools water during the day, on demand, regardless of what the sun is doing. A dedicated pool chiller, or a reversible heat pump that can run in cooling mode as well as heating mode, pulls heat directly out of the water the same way an air conditioner pulls heat out of a room. It's a real piece of equipment and a real investment, not a quick fix — but it's the only option here that gives you control over water temperature rather than just slowing down how hot it gets. What barely works

Dumping bags of ice into the pool shows up constantly online, and it's worth doing the actual math on why it's mostly a meme. A typical backyard pool holds somewhere around 12,000-20,000 gallons. Water's thermal mass is substantial — it takes roughly 8.3 BTUs to raise (or lower) one gallon of water by one degree. For a 12,000-gallon pool, dropping the temperature by even a single degree means removing roughly 100,000 BTUs, which works out to needing on the order of a thousand pounds of ice to make a one-degree dent — and that's assuming perfect heat transfer, which a bag of ice tossed in the shallow end does not achieve. It's a fun visual, not a functional cooling strategy.

The chemistry knock-on effect

Hot water doesn't just feel different — it changes what your pool needs. Higher temperatures mean higher chlorine demand and faster evaporation, and faster evaporation concentrates calcium hardness and dissolved solids in whatever water is left, which is exactly the setup that leads to scaling and cloudy water later in the season.
