
The Best Pool Finishes for Arizona Weather: Plaster, Pebble, Quartz, and Tile Compared

What Arizona Actually Does to a Pool Finish
Every finish in this comparison is fighting the same five things here, and none of them let up for six months of the year:

White Plaster
White plaster is still the most common finish we see on East Valley pools, and it is also the one most sensitive to everything on that list above. It is a cementitious surface, which means its condition is directly tied to water chemistry: low pH etches it, high pH and high calcium hardness scale it, and there is very little forgiveness in between. Under our sun and heat, plaster commonly holds up somewhere in the 7-12 year range before it needs resurfacing, sometimes less if chemistry has been inconsistent. Calcium scale shows up on plaster as a chalky, uneven texture rather than a clean stain, and once it bonds to the surface, removing it without damaging the finish takes real technique — often the kind of controlled surface treatment we cover in acid wash vs. chlorine wash. On feel, plaster starts smooth and stays that way as long as chemistry stays balanced, but plaster that has been chronically out of range develops a rough, sandpaper-like texture as the surface etches unevenly over time.
Colored Plaster
Colored, or pigmented, plaster is the same cementitious base as white plaster with color additives mixed in, and it inherits every one of white plaster's chemistry sensitivities plus one more problem: UV fade. Our sun is hard on pigment, and darker colors especially can mottle or lighten unevenly over the years, particularly in the parts of the pool that see the most direct afternoon exposure. Calcium scale reads differently on colored plaster — it often shows as a lighter, blotchy patch against the darker background rather than a uniform white haze, which makes it more visually obvious even at the same severity level as on white plaster. The maintenance burden is identical to white plaster otherwise: tight pH control, watching calcium hardness, and the same lifespan range, just with color as an added variable that ages independently of the surface's structural condition.
Pebble and Aggregate Finishes
Pebble finishes — small stones or aggregate embedded in a cementitious matrix — are noticeably more durable against Arizona's heat cycling and UV than plain plaster, and we see it in how long they hold up between resurfacing jobs, often well beyond what plaster manages. The tradeoff is texture: the exposed aggregate surface has more nooks for dust and fine debris to settle into after a monsoon blow-through, so it typically needs more consistent brushing to stay clean than a smooth plaster surface would. On comfort, pebble is rougher underfoot than plaster or quartz, which some owners like for grip and others find abrasive on bare feet over a long swim.
Quartz Finishes
Quartz finishes blend fine quartz aggregate into a polymer-modified plaster mix, landing somewhere between plaster and pebble on most of the metrics that matter here. The surface is denser and less porous than standard plaster, which means it resists staining and holds color better under UV than colored plaster does. It is also smoother than pebble, so it is a common pick for owners who want more durability than plaster without the rougher pebble texture underfoot. Calcium scale still forms on quartz — no cementitious finish is immune to hard Arizona water — but the denser surface tends to release scale more cleanly during a proper cleaning than a more porous plaster does. Lifespan generally runs longer than plain white plaster and in the same neighborhood as pebble, assuming water chemistry stays in range the whole time.
Tile
Glass and porcelain tile, whether it is a waterline band or a fully tiled pool, plays by different rules than every finish above it. Tile itself does not etch from pH swings and does not fade from UV the way pigmented plaster does — it is essentially inert to the chemical stress that wears down cementitious surfaces. What tile does get, reliably, in Arizona, is a calcium ring at the waterline. Evaporation happens right at that line every single day, and the minerals left behind concentrate exactly there, which is why almost every East Valley pool we service shows at least some scale buildup on waterline tile even when the rest of the pool looks clean. Because tile and grout won't tolerate the same aggressive removal methods a plaster surface can sometimes take, scale on tile needs a gentler, more careful approach to avoid damaging the glaze or grout lines. The upside is that well-installed tile essentially outlasts whatever plaster, pebble, or quartz surrounds it — it is the one finish on this list that isn't really on a replacement clock tied to heat and UV the way the others are.
How Finish Choice Changes Your Weekly Chemistry Targets
Whichever finish you have, it changes what "balanced" actually means for your pool. Plaster and colored plaster demand the tightest pH control of the group — they have the least tolerance for swings before etching or scaling shows up on the surface. Pebble and quartz are built on the same cementitious foundation underneath their aggregate, so they need the same core chemistry discipline even though the denser surface buys a little more margin for error before damage becomes visible. Tile shifts the conversation almost entirely to calcium hardness and evaporation management, since the surface itself won't degrade from an off pH reading the way plaster will — the waterline ring is a water-chemistry problem, not a tile problem.
