
Acid Wash vs. Chlorine Wash: Which Does Your Arizona Pool Need?
Every few weeks a Queen Creek homeowner asks us about an "acid wash" they saw mentioned online, usually after noticing stains they can't scrub off or plaster that looks dull no matter how much they shock it. The terminology gets muddy fast — acid wash, chlorine wash, and chemical wash all get used loosely, sometimes interchangeably, and that confusion leads people to a more aggressive fix than their pool actually needs. Here's what each process really does, when it's warranted, and why we don't reach for the acid before we've actually looked at the water.
What an Acid Wash Actually Is
An acid wash is a drain-and-scrub process. The pool is emptied completely, and a diluted muriatic acid solution is applied directly to the plaster or pebble surface, then scrubbed and rinsed. The acid doesn't just clean the surface — it dissolves a thin layer of the plaster itself, taking embedded stains, calcium nodules, and algae that has worked its way into the porous finish with it. That's the tradeoff: an acid wash gets rid of problems a surface scrub can't touch, but every pass removes real material from your pool's finish. A plaster surface only has so many acid washes in it over its lifetime before it's too thin to hold up.
What a Chlorine (or Chemical) Wash Is
A chlorine wash, sometimes called a chemical wash, is also a drain-and-scrub job, but the solution is a strong chlorine mix instead of acid. It's meant to oxidize organic staining and kill algae that has penetrated the plaster's pores without stripping the surface material the way acid does. It's the gentler of the two options and the right call when the problem is biological — algae, organic staining, mustard growth — rather than mineral scale or metal staining that's bonded to the surface itself.
When Each One Is Actually Warranted
The right call depends entirely on what's causing the problem, not on which one sounds more thorough:
- Metal or mineral staining (rust-colored or gray-green marks that don't respond to a stain treatment) usually points toward acid, since the stain is often bonded into the plaster surface itself.
- Algae that has penetrated the plaster after a pool sat neglected for a long stretch, where the green or black color doesn't fully brush away, is the more common case for a chlorine wash.
- A pool that's just dull, hazy, or lightly stained from ordinary neglect frequently doesn't need either one — a proper green-to-clean recovery with heavy shock, repeated brushing, and filtration often gets there without draining at all.
That last point matters more than most articles on this topic mention: a full drain-and-wash is the most invasive, most expensive option on the list, and it should be the last one considered, not the first.
Why Arizona's Water and Heat Change the Math

But it cuts both ways: our heat also makes an ill-timed drain riskier, since new plaster curing in 110°+ air can crack, and an empty shell sitting through a monsoon downpour can be pushed up out of the ground by rising groundwater. Timing a drain-and-wash correctly is as important as deciding whether you need one.
The Risks of DIY Acid Washing
We get asked whether a homeowner can do this themselves, and the honest answer is that the risk-to-savings ratio is bad. Muriatic acid is dangerous to handle without the right protective gear and ventilation, and getting the dilution or application time even slightly wrong can etch the plaster unevenly, leaving permanent blotchy patches instead of a uniform clean surface. Over-acidifying can also strip enough material to expose the aggregate underneath or shorten the plaster's remaining life by years. On top of the handling risk, most municipalities have rules about where acid-wash wastewater can legally go — it has to be neutralized and typically disposed of through a sanitary sewer cleanout, never dumped into a storm drain or the street, where it's both an environmental violation and genuinely harmful to the water table. This is one of those jobs where the cost of getting it wrong is a lot higher than the cost of hiring it out.
