How Long Should You Run Your Pool Pump in an Arizona Summer?

Pump runtime is one of those questions where the generic internet answer and the right answer for an East Valley pool aren't the same thing. National pool advice tends to assume mild summers and moderate bather load. Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, and the rest of the East Valley get neither — and that changes how long your pump actually needs to run to keep water clear and chlorine effective.

Start with turnover, not a fixed number of hours

The concept that actually matters is turnover: how long it takes your pump and filter to move the entire volume of your pool through the filtration system once. Most residential pools are sized so a full turnover happens roughly once a day at normal pump speed, which is the baseline every runtime recommendation is built around. A pool that only gets a partial turnover each day is filtering less of its water, which means more time for algae, debris, and cloudiness to take hold in the water that didn't get circulated. Runtime recommendations are really just an estimate of how many hours it takes your specific pump and plumbing to hit that one full turnover — which is why the "right" number varies pool to pool, not just region to region.

Why Arizona summers push runtime higher than the national advice

Several things stack up against East Valley pools that don't apply the same way in milder climates:

  • Heat above 110° accelerates almost every chemical reaction in the water, including the ones that consume chlorine, so sanitizer gets used up faster and needs more consistent circulation to stay effective.
  • Intense UV exposure burns off unstabilized chlorine within hours of direct sun, and even properly stabilized chlorine degrades faster under our sun than it would in a less intense climate.
  • Dust load from wind and monsoon activity adds fine particulate to the water constantly through the summer, and that particulate needs filtration time to get pulled out.
  • Algae grows noticeably faster in warm water, and East Valley pools commonly sit in the 85-90°+ range all summer — conditions that give algae a real head start if circulation lags.

Put together, a runtime that would be plenty for a pool in a cooler, less dusty climate often isn't enough here, especially in July and August when every one of these factors is at its peak.

Practical runtime by pump type

The right number depends heavily on what kind of pump you're running:

  • Single-speed pumps run at full power the entire time they're on, so homeowners commonly land somewhere around 8-10 hours a day in peak summer to get adequate turnover and keep up with chlorine demand. Running a single-speed pump that long isn't cheap, since it's pulling full wattage the whole time.
  • Variable-speed pumps flip the equation. Because they can run for many more hours at a low RPM, they typically achieve the same or better turnover while using meaningfully less electricity than a single-speed pump running fewer hours at full power. A variable-speed pump might run 10-12+ hours a day at a low setting and still cost less to operate than a single-speed pump running 8. Daytime circulation vs. off-peak electricity: a real tradeoff

Chlorine demand and algae risk both peak during daylight hours, when the sun is breaking down sanitizer and heat is at its highest — which argues for running your pump through the hottest part of the day so filtration is active when the water needs it most. But SRP and APS both offer time-of-use electricity plans that charge less overnight and more during peak afternoon hours, which argues for shifting runtime later or earlier in the day to save on the bill. There's no universally correct answer here, and we won't pretend there is: running midday gives your water the best circulation exactly when it needs it, while running early morning or overnight costs less per kilowatt-hour under most time-of-use plans. A reasonable middle ground many East Valley homeowners land on is splitting the schedule — part of the run during the cooler, cheaper early morning hours, and part during the afternoon heat when chlorine burn-off is worst — rather than committing the whole cycle to one extreme or the other. What matters most is that the total daily runtime still gets you a full turnover; when you place those hours is a genuine tradeoff between water clarity and electricity cost, not a right-or-wrong decision.

Monsoon season and winter adjustments

After a monsoon storm dumps dust and organic debris into the pool, it's worth running the pump longer than your normal summer schedule for a day or two to help the filter catch up with the extra load — the same way you'd increase runtime after any event that spikes what's in the water. On the other end of the year, once temperatures drop and bather load and algae pressure fall off, runtime can come down significantly; many East Valley pools only need something like 4-6 hours a day through the winter months to maintain adequate turnover.
