How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter in Arizona?
Your filter does the quiet, unglamorous work of keeping your water clear. In Arizona's dusty, high-evaporation climate, it works harder than almost anywhere in the country — and it needs attention more often than the manual suggests.
Cartridge filters
Deep-clean every 3–4 months, more often in dust season. A quick hose-off isn't enough; cartridges need a proper soak to remove oils and fine grit.
DE filters
Backwash when pressure rises 8–10 PSI over clean, and do a full tear-down and grid cleaning at least seasonally.
Sand filters
Backwash roughly every few weeks in summer; replace the sand every 3–5 years.
Signs your filter needs service now
- Cloudy water that won't clear with balanced chemistry
- Rising filter pressure
- Weak return jets / poor circulation
- Higher-than-usual pump energy use
