
Pool Chemistry Basics for Arizona's Desert Heat
You don't need a chemistry degree to keep a healthy pool, but understanding a few key numbers will save you money and headaches — especially with Arizona's notoriously hard water. These five numbers don't sit still on their own; heat, sun, and evaporation push every one of them in a direction, usually the wrong one, every single week of an Arizona summer. Knowing what each number does and why it moves is what separates chasing problems from staying ahead of them.
1. Free chlorine (1–3 ppm)
Your sanitizer. In the desert heat it burns off fast, so it needs frequent topping up. Direct sun alone can strip unstabilized chlorine out of the water within a couple of hours, and even properly stabilized chlorine degrades faster here than in a milder climate. A reading that looked fine on Monday can be gone by Thursday if nobody's watching it.
2. pH (7.4–7.6)
Affects comfort, chlorine effectiveness, and equipment. Arizona water tends to drift high, which causes cloudiness and scaling. High pH also makes chlorine noticeably less efficient at sanitizing, so a pool sitting at 8.0 pH is getting less real sanitizing power out of the same chlorine reading than one sitting at 7.5 — one more reason pH deserves as much attention as the chlorine number itself.
3. Total alkalinity (80–120 ppm)
A buffer that keeps pH stable. Too low and pH bounces around with every chemical addition or rainstorm; too high and it's hard to adjust pH back into range at all, since it resists movement in either direction. Getting alkalinity right first makes every other adjustment you make afterward hold steadier.
4. Calcium hardness (200–400 ppm)
This is the big one in Arizona. Our water is naturally high in calcium, which causes scaling on tile and equipment if left unchecked. Because evaporation removes only water and leaves minerals behind, calcium hardness climbs on its own all summer even if you never add a single chemical — it's the one number here that evaporation actively works against you on, week after week.
5. Cyanuric acid (30–50 ppm)
Sunscreen for your chlorine. Critical under our intense sun — too little and chlorine vanishes; too much and it stops working. Unlike chlorine, cyanuric acid doesn't burn off or get consumed doing its job, so it only ever goes up unless water is diluted or replaced — a detail that trips up a lot of pools running chlorine tablets for a full season without anyone checking this number.
How these five numbers interact
None of these numbers should be read in isolation. pH and alkalinity move together — alkalinity is what keeps pH from swinging wildly. Calcium hardness and pH together determine whether your water wants to deposit scale onto surfaces or, at the other extreme, pull calcium back out of your plaster. And chlorine's real sanitizing power depends on both pH and cyanuric acid at the same time, not on the chlorine reading alone. Pool professionals often reference the Langelier Saturation Index, a formula that weighs several of these numbers together to judge whether water is scale-forming or corrosive — you don't need to calculate it yourself, but it's the reasoning behind why a tech checks all five numbers together rather than fixating on just one.
Testing frequency matters as much as the numbers themselves
A perfect reading on Monday tells you nothing about Thursday in an Arizona summer. Heat, sun, evaporation, and bather load all move these numbers continuously, which is why a once-a-month check — fine in a milder climate — leaves real gaps here.
