When (and When Not) to Drain Your Pool in Arizona

We get this question constantly in Queen Creek and San Tan Valley: "should I just drain my pool and start fresh?" Sometimes the answer is yes. More often, a drain is being considered for a problem that regular chemistry can actually fix, and the homeowner doesn't realize that draining an Arizona pool at the wrong time of year carries real risk to the shell and plaster. Here's how to tell which situation you're actually in.

The Three Real Reasons to Drain

A full or partial drain is genuinely the right move in a small number of situations, and they're all about water chemistry that's climbed past the point where adding more chemicals can fix it:

  • Calcium hardness has climbed too high. Once calcium hardness gets well beyond the usable range for plaster and pebble finishes, you can't dilute it back down with chemicals — the only fix is replacing some of the water. This is the endpoint of the scaling process we cover in our calcium buildup article.
  • Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) is too high to manage. CYA only goes up over time from stabilized chlorine products — it never breaks down on its own. Past a certain point, chlorine stops working efficiently no matter how much you add, a problem sometimes called chlorine lock. Diluting the water is the only real reset.
  • Total dissolved solids have accumulated in old water. Every gallon that evaporates leaves minerals behind, and every top-off adds more. After enough seasons, TDS gets high enough that the water takes on a permanently dull cast and chemicals stop performing efficiently, no matter how well-balanced the individual numbers look.

Why East Valley Fill Water Starts You Behind

Here's the part that surprises a lot of homeowners: the water you refill with isn't a clean slate. Most East Valley municipal tap water already carries meaningful calcium hardness straight out of the hose — commonly in a range that's already partway toward the upper limit plaster and pebble finishes tolerate well. That means a drain-and-refill here doesn't reset your calcium hardness to zero the way it might in a softer-water region; it resets it to whatever your tap water already contains, and the clock toward "too high again" starts running sooner than owners moving from other states expect. This is a big part of why routine chemical balancing matters more here than in milder climates — catching drift early stretches the years between drains.

Why Draining in Summer Is Genuinely Dangerous

This is the piece we can't stress enough: an empty pool shell in an Arizona summer is at real risk. Two separate hazards show up at exactly the time of year most people think about draining:

  • Hydrostatic pressure can pop the shell. Groundwater pushes up against a pool floor and walls from underneath. With water inside the pool, that pressure is balanced. Empty the pool during monsoon season, when a heavy storm raises the local water table quickly, and there's nothing counteracting the upward pressure — a fiberglass or gunite shell can actually lift or crack out of the ground.
  • New plaster can crack curing in extreme heat. If a drain includes any resurfacing work, plaster needs a controlled, gradual cure. Curing in 110°+ air with intense direct sun dries the surface far too fast and unevenly, which is a common cause of the fine cracking and blotching pool owners see on summer-cured plaster.

Because of both risks, the realistic drain season in our area runs roughly October through April — cooler air temperatures, a lower water table, and far less monsoon risk. Outside of a genuine emergency, we don't recommend scheduling a drain in the peak of summer, and any legitimate pool professional should be telling you the same thing.

Partial Drain vs. Full Drain

Not every situation calls for emptying the pool completely. A partial drain — pumping out a portion of the water and refilling to dilute calcium hardness, CYA, or TDS back into a workable range — is often enough and carries much less risk than a full drain, since the shell never sits fully empty. A full drain is usually reserved for resurfacing work, an acid or chlorine wash job, or water chemistry so far out of range that a partial exchange won't move the numbers enough to matter. Whichever route makes sense, it should be a decision based on actual test numbers, not a guess.

Draining the Right Way

Where the water goes matters as much as when you drain it. Pool water — especially with residual chlorine, acid wash byproducts, or high salt content from a salt system — generally needs to be dechlorinated and discharged to a sanitary sewer cleanout, not the street, storm drain, or gutter. Most East Valley municipalities have specific rules about this, and draining to the street can mean runoff carrying chlorine and salt straight into local washes, which is both an environmental problem and, in a lot of jurisdictions, a code violation. If you're not sure which discharge point your property uses or what your city requires, that's a question worth getting a straight answer on before you start pumping, not after.

Get an Honest Read Before You Drain

Because a drain is disruptive, weather-dependent, and not something you want to redo, it's worth having someone look at your actual numbers before committing to one.
