
Pool Algae Treatment in Arizona: Green, Mustard, and Black Algae (and What Actually Kills Each)

Green, mustard, and black algae are different organisms with different tolerances to chlorine, and treating all three the same way is the single biggest reason homeowners dump shock into a pool for a week and watch nothing change. Green Algae: The One Most People Actually Have
Green algae is free-floating and fast-growing, which is why it's the algae most homeowners recognize. It shows up as cloudy green water, a slick film on walls and steps, or a full-on pea-soup pool after a few days of neglected chlorine. It brushes off easily and clouds the whole water column rather than staying fixed in one spot, which is the tell that separates it from the other two.
The protocol here is the one most guides get right: brush every surface first so the shock can actually reach the algae instead of fighting a protective slime layer, then shock hard — a real, aggressive dose, not a token capful — and run the filtration system around the clock until the water clears, not on its normal cycle. Backwash or clean the filter partway through, since it fills with dead algae fast and starts choking your circulation right when you need it most. Retest once the water clears and rebalance from there. Green algae, caught early, is genuinely one of the more DIY-friendly pool problems there is.
Mustard Algae: The One That Keeps Coming Back
Mustard algae looks like a fine layer of dirt or sand dusted across the pool floor and walls, usually in shaded areas, and it brushes off easily too — which is exactly what fools people into thinking it's just debris. The giveaway is that it's back within a day or two no matter how much you vacuum, and standard chlorine levels barely touch it. Mustard algae is genuinely more chlorine-resistant than the green variety, which is why the usual shock-and-brush routine that clears a green pool often does almost nothing here.
Getting rid of it for good takes two things most people skip. First, a superchlorination dose well above a normal shock, paired with an algaecide actually formulated for mustard algae rather than a generic all-purpose one. Second, and this is the step that determines whether it comes back in a week: everything that touched the water during the outbreak has to be treated too. Swimsuits, pool toys, brushes, vacuum heads, even the net — mustard algae spores survive on all of it, and reintroducing a single contaminated brush head into a freshly cleared pool is enough to restart the whole cycle. Bathing suits should be washed or bleached, and equipment should be soaked in a diluted chlorine solution before it goes anywhere near the water again.
Black Algae: The One That Isn't Really on the Surface
Black algae shows up as small, dark blue-green to black spots that feel raised and bumpy against smooth plaster, usually clustered along cracks, corners, and rough patches in the surface. It's the toughest of the three because it isn't really living on the surface — it sends roots down into the pores of plaster and gunite, and it builds a protective outer layer that shrugs off normal chlorine levels almost entirely.
Treating it means physically breaking through that protective layer before chemistry can do anything. That's a wire brush, applied hard and repeatedly directly on each spot, on plaster or pebble surfaces specifically — vinyl and fiberglass pools can't take a wire brush without damaging the surface, and that distinction matters before anyone reaches for one. Once the heads are punctured, a targeted chlorine or algaecide application applied directly to the spots does the actual killing, and it typically takes more than one round. This is also why black algae has a reputation for recurring even after a pool looks clean: any roots that survive down in the plaster's pores can push a new head back up through the same spot weeks later, which means a single treatment that looks successful on day one isn't always the end of it.
When DIY Is Fine, and When It Isn't
A pool that turned green over a few missed days, with no history of chronic algae, is a reasonable DIY job if you're willing to brush hard and stay on top of the shock-and-filter cycle for several days straight. Where we'd tell you honestly to stop guessing and call someone: mustard algae that keeps returning after you've already treated equipment and suits, black algae spreading across multiple areas of plaster, or a pool where chlorine looks fine on your test strip but algae keeps getting a foothold anyway. What a Chlorine Wash Actually Is, and Why It's a Last Resort
Sometimes algae — usually mustard or black — has worked so far into the plaster that no amount of surface shocking will fully clear it, and the pool has to be drained and treated directly. That process is called a chlorine wash: a strong chlorine solution applied straight to the drained surface to oxidize algae and staining that's penetrated the pores, without stripping material off the plaster the way an acid wash does. It's genuinely effective for algae that's rooted in, but it's also disruptive, weather-dependent, and not something to jump to before ruling out recovery chemistry first. Why Arizona Makes All of This Worse
Our climate doesn't just cause algae blooms — it accelerates every stage of them. Heat above 90° lets algae multiply far faster than it would in a milder climate, so a small patch you'd catch easily elsewhere can bloom across a whole pool in a couple of days here.
